Harvey Rural Community Responds to Provincial Minerals Strategy Announcement

For Immediate Release

March 2, 2026

Harvey, NB

The Government of New Brunswick has released its new Comprehensive Minerals Strategy, outlining its plan to modernize mining legislation, improve regulatory processes, and attract investment in the province’s mineral sector.

As part of the announcement, the Province confirmed that a formal Request for Expressions of Interest will be issued within the next 30 days regarding the Lake George antimony deposit.

Mayor Richard Corey and CAO Shawn Hawley were advised in advance that this announcement would be made. In recent weeks, the Mayor exchanged directly with Natural Resources Minister John Herron, along with senior departmental staff. Municipal representatives also met with officials from the Department of Natural Resources to discuss the Lake George deposit and the broader strategy.

“These early conversations were constructive and direct,” said Mayor Corey. “We made it clear that our priority is transparency, environmental responsibility, and meaningful communication with residents.”

The Province has stated that its strategy will focus on:

• Improving efficiency and predictability in permitting

• Introducing updated mining legislation this spring

• Encouraging Indigenous participation as rights holders

• Exploring targeted incentives to attract responsible development

Harvey Rural Community understands that mining once played a meaningful role in New Brunswick’s economy. At the same time, any future activity near Lake George must consider environmental protection, community impact, infrastructure capacity, and long term sustainability.

At this stage, no development approval has been granted. The upcoming Request for Expressions of Interest is an early step in a potential process.

The municipal office will:

• Monitor all provincial communications

• Engage directly with provincial officials

• Seek clarity on timelines and consultation requirements

• Share updates with residents as information becomes available

“We are committed to keeping residents informed,” said Hawley. “As more details are released, we will ensure the community understands what is proposed, what the process involves, and where local input will occur.”

Further updates will be posted on the Harvey Rural Community website and social media channels as updates are released.
